Ferrari are waiting for FIA approval to introduce an upgraded Formula 1 power unit and new Shell fuel as early as the Austrian Grand Prix, in a move that could sharpen the impact of Lewis Hamilton’s Barcelona breakthrough.
The update is centred on Ferrari’s 067/6 engine and has been developed under ADUO rules, with Motorsport.com reporting that the team plan to ship the third version of the power unit to Spielberg pending approval from the governing body.
The change matters because Hamilton’s first Ferrari grand prix win in Barcelona has already shifted the mood around Maranello. Now the question is whether Ferrari can turn one result into a more sustained threat to Mercedes and Red Bull.
Ferrari’s Austria package now carries a bigger Hamilton test
According to Motorsport.com’s latest Ferrari update, Shell has produced fuel specifically for the revised configuration, while the engine concept is designed to run hotter and improve combustion efficiency.
Ferrari are also expected to bring their second aerodynamic upgrade package of the season in Austria, following the step introduced in Miami. That adds another layer to the post-Barcelona story: Hamilton’s win was not just a morale boost, but a benchmark Ferrari must now validate on a different circuit.
ReadMotorSport has already examined why Ferrari’s Hamilton dilemma can no longer wait, and this upgrade makes that debate sharper. If the power-unit gain lands, Ferrari’s internal title priorities could become harder to avoid.
