Jesse Love suffers painful Watkins Glen déjà vu as Connor Zilisch gets revenge

Share
  • Connor Zilisch avenged a 2023 loss to claim his third straight Watkins Glen win.
  • Love was emotional after a last-lap tyre lock-up cost him a hard-fought victory.
  • Zilisch noted the irony of the finish, highlighting that he “one-upped” Love.

Last year, it was Jesse Love basking in championship glory while Connor Zilisch sat torn apart emotionally at Phoenix Raceway following the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series finale. But this past Saturday at Watkins Glen International, the roles were reversed.

The reigning champion, Love, found himself on the bitter end this time despite pouring countless hours into sharpening his road-course craft. Saving fuel for perhaps the first time in his road-racing career, the Richard Childress Racing driver appeared destined for victory entering the final lap of the 82-lap showdown. But the final corner had other plans.

A costly miscue opened the door for longtime friend and rival Zilisch, who capitalized instantly to steal his third straight victory at The Glen. In a cruel twist of déjà vu, Zilisch returned the favor in almost identical fashion to Love’s unforgettable last-corner move from 2023, same track, same turn, same heartbreak.

While celebration erupted around the No. 1 camp, Love was left gutted beside his car, head down and visibly emotional during his post-race interview.

‘I probably need to feel this pain’: Love opens up after heartbreaking loss

For a driver who wears his heart on his sleeve and races with pride, Saturday’s defeat during the Mission 200 at The Glen hit Love hard.

The youngster had done almost everything right through the closing stages of the race. He led laps (18), managed fuel, held off relentless pressure from one of the best road racers in the garage, and kept himself in position despite the mounting tension behind the wheel.

But one mistake entering the final corner changed everything. Trying to balance fuel conservation with defending the lead from Zilisch’s charging No. 1 JRM Chevrolet, Love locked the right-front tire and drifted wide just enough to lose control of the moment. And Zilisch? He needed no second invitation.

The disappointment immediately poured out afterward. “It’s been a lot of work,” Love said, his voice cracking with emotion. “Sorry, I put so much effort into the road-course side of things over the last year and a half, and because of that, I care so much about it. The pieces were there today, this weekend, and I probably wasn’t missing the skill today; I was missing the mental strength to do my job in a situation like that.”

“And it catches me off guard because that’s not who I am, and I’m better than that. And you know, I probably need to feel this pain for a while to be better because of it,” he added.

The honesty in Love’s reaction said plenty about how much the race meant to him. In fact, for the 21-year-old, this was not simply another second-place finish. It was a race he believed he should have won against the very driver he had measured himself against for years.

At one point during the interview, Love admitted the mistake felt “embarrassing,” especially given the effort he has invested in improving as a road racer. And perhaps that’s what made the moment so difficult. Against someone else, the loss may have hurt less. But against Zilisch, it carried a backstory.

Zilisch finally returns the favor from their unforgettable 2023 ARCA battle

First off, the irony of the finish was impossible to ignore. Three years ago, back in the ARCA Menards Series race at Watkins Glen, it was Love who played spoiler. On that day, Zilisch appeared headed for victory in his ARCA debut before Love muscled past him in the final corner to steal the win in dramatic fashion.

Nearly two years later, and with both drivers several races in, the script flipped completely. This time, it was Zilisch chasing Love down over the closing laps. Despite damage to his car after clipping the grass and brushing the wall earlier in the race, Zilisch refused to lift and kept charging forward while Love focused on saving fuel and protecting track position.

As soon as the white flag waved, the pressure became overwhelming as the 19-year-old steadily erased the gap and waited for Love to make even the smallest error. When the No. 2 overdrove the final corner, the opening appeared instantly, and unlike the 2023 finish, Zilisch made the pass cleanly.

“As soon as I crossed the line, that’s kind of what I thought of,” Zilisch said afterward. “When he beat me in the ARCA race and passed me in the last corner to win that one. It was basically the exact same thing, except he hit me; I didn’t have to hit him to do it. So, I think I one-upped him there.”

It could either be a smug or a playful jab between two longtime friends, but underneath it sat a deeper truth. Few rivalries in NASCAR’s rising pipeline have produced moments as dramatic as the ones Love and Zilisch continue to create together.

One walked away with redemption. The other walked away with another painful memory at the same corner where he once celebrated.
