Toto Wolff concerned over tifosi pressure as Antonelli championship talks soar

Toto Wolff doubles down that Kimi Antonelli should continue to remain grounded as the buzz around his championship has intensified much more after his third win at Miami. The Italian is leaving no opportunity to make his way into the record books.

Recently, he joined Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher to secure the first three poles at successive Grand Prixs. While Wolff is a proud team principal seeing Antonelli achieve brilliance in just his second year of F1, he stressed that the championship still remains a long way off, and he should not get carried away by the buzz.

Toto Wolff flags tifosi pressure in Sinner–Antonelli comparison

Wolff issued a reminder to Antonelli that his experienced and “killer” teammate, George Russell, shouldn’t be forgotten, as he remains a strong competition to him. He’s aware that his parents are keeping him humble, but he wants him to be repeatedly reminded not to take Russell leniently, and that a championship is a long game — anything can happen. He added, “Kimi can hopefully win many championships over 10 or 15 years – we don’t want to stumble now with these huge expectations on him.”

However, he thinks the bigger issue is the Tifosi, as they have high expectations from Sinner and Antonelli, who are winning in their respective sports. This came as the Italian team’s dream to qualify for the summer World Cup in football was shattered.

Mercedes boss believes that tifosi’s hopes for Antonelli need to be tempered, as they could put immense pressure on the young driver and raise high expectations. He explained that Antonelli and Sinner are at different stages of their careers, and their success can’t be measured on the same scale. He further elaborated, “We have won three Grands Prix, Sinner is world number one and has won many Grand Slams.”

Opinion: Wolff is logical about the champ buzz

In F1, anything can happen; a few races cannot decide a title, and one shouldn’t take other teams lightly as the tables can turn at any moment (think: Red Bull Racing’s comeback during McLaren’s domination). Yes, Antonelli has what it takes to become a world champion this year or in the years to come. However, it shouldn’t be ignored that mistakes will happen, there are tracks where challenges emerge, and pressure eventually piles up when experienced drivers start delivering.

For Antonelli, there are certain tracks he is good at, but last year, he admitted he struggled in the European leg of the championship. Of course, he will improve on those tracks, but it doesn’t happen overnight. While Mercedes appears dominant, it’s not always just about the car but also the person behind the wheel and how well and consistently he can deliver on a challenging circuit across all sessions.

While it’s hard to speculate what’s about to happen in Europe this year and whether Antonelli’s performance will differ from last year, one thing is certain: other drivers, including his own teammate, will capitalise on their edge and experience they have over him, which in itself is a big challenge. What Antonelli is doing at the moment is impressive, but Wolff is right that too much success getting to one’s head could stop a driver from growing in the sport.

The conclusion is that a championship is defined both by a driver’s highs and lows. The highs recognise the hard work and talent, whereas the lows teach to improve and not give up on the dream, and to always hold the head high no matter the circumstances.
