- Newey’s absence deepens concern for a team yet to score in 2026.
Adrian Newey, the 67-year-old Aston Martin team principal, has reportedly been hospitalised following a health scare, according to the Daily Mail.
The British publication reported the story on 4 May 2026. Newey was absent from last weekend’s Miami Grand Prix, and sources suggest the absence was linked to his health rather than his usual selective race schedule.
Aston Martin has not confirmed the reports. A spokesperson told the Daily Mail: “We don’t comment on personal matters relating to any of our team members. Adrian is working and was on campus last week.”
Much of the reporting remains unverified. No official diagnosis has been disclosed.
What the Daily Mail reported
The Daily Mail reported that Newey has been recovering from an undisclosed medical issue for several weeks.
The publication said he has been working primarily from his home in Sunninghill, England, and received hospital treatment at some point during this period.
The report was partially supported by F1 publication TheJudge13, which claimed its own sources within the team had raised concerns about Newey’s health internally.
Those sources told the outlet that Newey had been absent from Aston Martin’s Silverstone campus in recent weeks, though he continued to contribute to the team’s work from a distance.
The Aston Martin spokesperson’s statement acknowledged that Newey was working and had been on campus recently. It did not, however, address the specifics of his condition.
Why this matters for Aston Martin and F1
The timing of this development adds pressure to a team already struggling badly. Aston Martin has not scored a single point in 2026.
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll finished 15th and 17th, respectively, in Miami. The team is currently competing with Cadillac at the bottom of the grid.
The team’s problems began before the season even started. During pre-season testing, Aston Martin discovered severe vibrations coming from the Honda power unit fitted to the AMR26.
In Australia, Newey told the media that those vibrations posed a real health risk to the drivers. Alonso said he could not safely complete more than 25 consecutive laps without risking permanent nerve damage to his hands.
Aston Martin ambassador Jenson Button said at Miami that Newey was deliberately holding back upgrades for a larger package later in the year.
“He’s not going to want to come with a little package,” Button told Sky F1. “I think he’s preparing a bigger package for a bit later in the year.”
Newey’s value to Aston Martin extends far beyond race weekends. His designs have contributed to 14 Drivers’ championships, 12 Constructors’ championships and 223 race victories between 1991 and 2024.
The British designer’s arrival at Aston Martin was meant to be the step that turned the team from a midfield outfit into a genuine championship contender.
His role as team principal, however, has attracted questions since he was appointed to the position in November 2025, following Andy Cowell’s move to Chief Strategy Officer.
It was never a role considered well-suited to Newey’s strengths as a designer and engineer.
The team’s next race is the Canadian Grand Prix in three weeks. The F1 world will be watching to see whether Newey is present in the paddock.
