Audi confirms Sauber as ‘strategic partner’ for 2026 F1 entry

Audi has finally announced it will team up with Sauber as a “strategic partner” when it enters Formula 1 in 2026.

Following months of speculation since its F1 plans began taking shape in August, Audi confirmed it will become a shareholder in Sauber Motorsports.

While the German manufacturer’s entry for 2026 was announced at the Belgian Grand Prix, Audi delayed the unveiling of which F1 team it would be partnering despite it being well known about its talks with Sauber.

Sauber said “this partnership will bring the team to new heights” and guarantees “the long-term future of the company”, in what becomes its second tie-up with a major manufacturer this century.

The Swiss-based outfit previously worked with BMW from 2006-2009 after its contract with Williams ended at the end of 2005, claiming one victory at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and finishing runner-up in the 2007 constructors’ championship.

Earlier this year, with its negotiations with Audi well underway, Sauber’s current partners Alfa Romeo announced it would leave at the end of the 2023 season.

This is expected to see the team return to the Sauber identity in 2024 and 2025 before Audi’s takeover, and round off its long association with Ferrari as a power unit supplier the same year.

“Audi is the best strategic partner for the Sauber Group,” said Sauber owner Finn Rausing, who is set to keep a share in the team.

“It is clear that we share values and a vision, and we look forward to achieving our common goals in a strong and successful partnership.”

Sauber team boss Frederic Vasseur felt Audi’s presence will only accelerate its hopes of becoming a front-running team in the long term.

“The partnership between Audi AG and Sauber Motorsport is a key step for our team as we continue to make progress towards the front of the grid,” he said.

“To become Audi’s official works team is not only an honour and a great responsibility: it’s the best option for the future, and we are fully confident we can help Audi achieve the objectives they have set for their journey in F1.”

Audi board member Oliver Hoffman hinted its previous use of Sauber’s wind tunnel for Audi’s other motorsport ventures was a key factor in the deal.

“We are delighted to have gained such an experienced and competent partner for our ambitious F1 project,” said Hoffman.

“We already know the Sauber Group with its state-of-the-art facility and experienced team from previous collaborations, and are convinced that together we will form a strong team.”

Adam baker, project leader for Audi’s F1 operation, added: “Sauber is a first-class partner for the use of the Audi Power Unit. We are looking forward to working with an experienced team that has helped shape many eras of Formula 1 history. Together, we want to write the next chapter starting in 2026.”

Audi’s entry to F1 is the first major addition to the grid since CEO Stefano Domenicali replaced Chase Carey in the role at the start of last year.

“It is great news to hear that Audi will have a partnership with Sauber for their entry into Formula 1 in 2026,” Domenicali said.

“The combination of those two names is a very exciting prospect for our sport. It highlights the strong momentum that Formula 1 has and the belief in our strategy to further grow and enhance the sport while delivering on our sustainability plans to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030 with advanced sustainable fuels in the cars in 2026.

“We look forward to seeing their progress over the coming years and the car on the grid for the team’s first race.”
