Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko believes remaining at AlphaTauri is Pierre Gasly’s best option in Formula 1 after Sergio Perez’s recent contract extension.

The Milton Keynes-based team announced last week that Perez had signed a new two-year deal until 2024, all but ruling out Gasly for a return to Red Bull.

Gasly, who has a contract in place until the end of 2023, felt this year would mark his last chance to convince Red Bull he deserves another shot after it dropped him midway through the 2019 season.

Since his return to AlphaTauri, Gasly has scored three podium finishes – including a shock maiden victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.

But while Gasly could now consider a move away from the Red Bull fold, Marko doesn’t see the Frenchman having many better alternatives.

Speaking to German publication Formel1.de, Marko said: “Before the signing, of course, I spoke to Gasly, explained the situation to him and, yes, we’ll just have to see what happens with Gasly after ’23.”

Asked if Red Bull would ponder releasing Gasly from his contract before 2023, Marko said: “What would be the alternative?

“I don’t think there is any alternative for him at the moment that would be significantly better than AlphaTauri.”

Marko hinted that AlphaTauri’s driver line-up of Gasly and Yuki Tusonda would likely remain unchanged for next season, meaning all of Red Bull’s junior drivers would have to wait a further year for a possible F1 promotion.

“It’s safe to assume that the current drivers are set,” Marko added.

“But, I mean, we still have with coronavirus buzzing in the room, so that means replacement drivers can come.

“I don’t hope anyone gets hurt, but they’ll all have to wait another year.”
