McLaren unveil MCL36 for 2022 F1 season

McLaren has become the latest team to launch its 2022 Formula 1 car, revealing an updated livery on the MCL36 at its headquarters in Woking.

After securing its first top-three finish in the constructors’ championship for eight years in 2020, McLaren aimed to consolidate its position and move closer to pace-setters Mercedes and Red Bull last year.

But a season-long fight with a resurgent Ferrari saw it lose out to the Italian outfit in the battle for P3, ending the year 48.5 points behind its rival.

While it slipped a position in the overall standings, McLaren continued to show promise throughout the campaign – including a first victory since Brazil 2012 at the Italian Grand Prix.

For the second consecutive year, the Woking-based squad will field Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo as its driver line-up.

Norris comes off the back of his best season to date, claiming four podium finishes and a maiden pole position on his way to a sixth place finish in the drivers’ championship.

While Ricciardo claimed McLaren’s win at Monza, the Australian struggled to find his feet in his first year at the team and was generally outpaced by Norris.

The MCL36 features an all-new livery, with the team’s traditional papaya orange colours featuring shades of blue and black.

McLaren is the fourth team on this year’s grid to unveil its 2022 car, with Haas, Red Bull and Aston Martin having already revealed their designs.

Last year marked McLaren’s first season being powered by a Mercedes engine since 2014 after striking an engine deal with the German manufacturer.

McLaren’s 2022 challenger will first its first proper run-out at the first pre-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 23-25.
