Ferrari reveal date for 2022 F1 car launch
Ferrari has announced the launch date for its 2022 Formula 1 car that is hopes will propel it back into race and title winning contention.
The Scuderia bounced back from a horrendous 2020 season that marked its worst campaign for 40 years to finish best of the rest in the constructors’ standings behind Red Bull and Mercedes last year.
A season-long scrap with rivals McLaren was eventually settled as Ferrari’s new hybrid system, unveiled at the Russian Grand Prix, powered them ahead in the latter stages of the year.
Having parted ways with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel at the end of 2020, the arrival of Carlos Sainz to partner two-time grand prix winner Charles Leclerc meant Ferrari fielded its youngest driver line-up for nearly 60 years.
Sainz’s debut season for the Italian outfit was a resounding success, securing four podium finishes and finishing two places ahead of Leclerc in the drivers’ standings.
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto revealed its 2022 challenger, which will be launched on February 17, will feature “a lot of innovation” as it bids to end a 14-year wait to win a world title.
Following its failure to win a race in 2021, it meant Ferrari went back-to-back seasons without a victory for the first time since 1993, with its last triumph coming in Singapore in 2019.
Ferrari’s new car, that is yet to be named, will make its on-track debut at the first pre-season test in Barcelona on February 23.
It means two of the 10 teams on this year’s grid have outlined its launch date, with Aston Martin announcing its 2022 car would be unveiled on February 10 ahead of the new season.
