AlphaTauri announces February launch for AT02

AlphaTauri has revealed the launch date for its 2021 car, confirming the AT02 will be unveiled publicly on February 19.

The Faenza-based team underwent a rebranding last year having been formally known as Toro Rosso since its takeover of Minardi in 2006.

The AlphaTauri name was chosen to promote Red Bull’s official clothing line, with an an all-new livery revealed to show the team’s new identity at the 2020 launch.

Although it dropped to seventh in the constructors’ championship 2020 proved AlphaTauri’s best season to date, accumulating over 100 points for the first time in its history.

It also claimed a shock victory at the Italian Grand Prix, 12 years on from the team’s only other race win, which ironically also came at Monza, with Sebastian Vettel.

Monza victor Pierre Gasly remains to spearhead AlphaTauri’s driver line-up, with the Frenchman looking to build on his impressive 2020 campaign where he scored points in 10 of the 17 races.

Having not opted to retain Daniil Kvyat alongside Gasly, AlphaTauri has promoted Honda junior Yuki Tsunoda to a race seat.

The Japanese driver, who finished third in his rookie Formula 2 season, will be youngest on the grid at 20 years old, becoming Japan’s first Formula 1 driver since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014.
