Mercedes reveals launch date for 2021 car

Mercedes has announced it will unveil its 2021 car on March 2 just prior to pre-season testing, as it targets an eighth successive Formula 1 world championship.

The Brackley-based outfit once again asserted its dominance last year, defending both world titles for a record-breaking seventh straight season, eclipsing Ferrari’s previous record of six in the 2000s.

The W11 won 13 of the 17 races during the shortened 2020 campaign, aiding Lewis Hamilton’s charge to equal Michael Schumacher’s record seven F1 titles.

With the regulations remaining largely stable, the team’s new challenger, named the W12, is expected to be the car to beat.

Vallteri Bottas will continue racing for the Silver Arrows for a fifth consecutive season, with the Finn targeting a maiden drivers’ crown after finishing runner-up the past two years.

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton has yet to be confirmed for this season having not agreed terms on a new Mercedes contract.

The Briton is expected to sign a new deal, but there has been no word from either Mercedes or Hamilton about the reason for the ongoing delay.
