Norris apologises for Stroll/Hamilton comments

Lando Norris has apologised for “stupid, careless” comments believed to be aimed at Formula 1 rivals Lance Stroll and Lewis Hamilton after the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Norris left Portimao frustrated having run as high as fourth early on before eventually finishing outside of the points in 13th place.

The McLaren driver’s race was hampered by a collision with Racing Point driver Stroll at Turn 1, with the contact leaving him with a damaged front wing.

The stewards deemed Stroll responsible and handed him a five-second time penalty, but in the post-race interviews Norris said the Canadian “doesn’t seem to learn anything he does” following a similar incident with Max Verstappen in practice.

A follow up question on his reaction to Hamilton’s record-breaking 92nd career victory saw him respond with “It doesn’t mean anything to me” as he has “a car which should win every race”.

Following his widespread remarks, Norris took to social media on Tuesday to issue an apology for his comments, although he didn’t specify which he was referring to.

“I owe an apology,” Norris said. “I’ve been stupid and careless with some things I’ve said lately in media and interviews, and haven’t shown the respect I should have to certain people.

“I’m not that kind of person, so know I should apologise to them but also everyone reading [or] listening. Sorry.”
