The Renault Formula 1 team has confirmed Esteban Ocon will be released from his Mercedes contract to drive for the team in the post-Abu Dhabi Grand Prix test.

Ocon will return to the F1 grid next year after spending 2019 on the sidelines as Mercedes’ reserve driver, replacing the outbound Nico Hulkenberg.

Once the deal was announced, Mercedes cut down Ocon’s involvement with the team, but there was no clear timeframe for when he would link up with the French manufacturer.

But the Anglo-German outfit has granted the Frenchman the opportunity to participate for Renault in the two-day post-season test at the Yas Marina circuit next month.

Confirming the news via social media, Renault said: “Esteban Ocon will officially join Renault F1 Team on Monday December 2 and will take part in both test days at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on December 3 and 4.”

Aside from being present at every race this season, Ocon has piloted the Mercedes W10 in specific tests. His most recent showing came at Paul Ricard in October during 2020 Pirelli tyre testing.

Abu Dhabi will mark Ocon’s final appearance in Mercedes colours, where he will be on standby should the team require his services.
