GP3 points scorer Ferrucci graduates to F2 with Trident

Haas Formula 1 development driver and GP3 points scorer Santino Ferrucci will complete the rest of the 2017 F2 season with Trident, partnering Nabil Jeffri at the team.

He fills the spot vacated by Sergio Canamasas’s move to Rapax after the Azerbaijan round of the championship, which was temporarily covered by Raffaele Marciello and Callum Ilott in Austria and Britain.

The partnership comes months after Ferrucci completed two days of post-season testing in Abu Dhabi with the Italian’s GP3 squad last December.

He completed a total of 94 laps, finishing second-fastest on the timesheets on two occasions.

“Back then, he impressed the team’s staff, bringing home great results and keeping his name among the top-five at all times,” Trident’s team manager Giacomo Ricci said.

“I am sure that Santino has all the skills needed to adapt to a F2 car very quickly. Also thanks to his F1 experience, he will not have problems in managing more power and carbon fibre brakes.”

Ferrucci raced 24 times in GP3 for DAMS, claiming a best result of third in last year’s Belgian sprint event.

The American is the only driver from the French outfit to score in 2017 so far, finishing ninth and eighth in the opening round in Spain as it places last in the teams’ championship.

He has been the longest-serving racer there since its introduction to the series in 2016.

A replacement for Ferrucci to join Bruno Baptista and Tatiana Calderon for the remainder of the season is yet to be announced.
