Daniel Ricciardo was delighted with a superb recovery drive as he climbed from the back of the grid to fifth place in the British Grand Prix.
A combination of a five-place penalty for a gearbox change and a turbo failure in qualifying had left the Australian down in 19th on the grid.
It proved an action-packed race as Ricciardo gained good ground in the early laps before seeing his progress wiped out when he ran wide on the exit of Luffield.
The Red Bull driver swiftly scythed his way back through the pack and ultimately wound up fifth after problems for Nico Hulkenberg and Sebastian Vettel in the dying stages.
Ricciardo says he thoroughly enjoyed the race and hopes that he was able to put a good show for the Silverstone fans.
“I hope they showed a lot of that on TV,” he said. “I just felt like the whole race I was overtaking cars and I hope the fans enjoyed it.
“We made up a chunk of positions early on and then I got a bit greedy, went off track and ended up at the back again.”
“It was great fun coming back through the field and I gave it everything. I caught Hulkenberg with a few laps to go and then Seb had his issue which handed me fifth, so danke Sebastian.”
Ricciardo remains fourth in the drivers’ championship, but loses ground to Valterri Bottas who also recovered from a gearbox penalty to take second.
