Hamilton cruises to Canadian victory as Vettel falters

Lewis Hamilton cruised to a 56th career victory in Canada as title rival Sebastian Vettel suffered problems allowing the Briton to gain valuable championship points.

Hamilton had to fend off the fast-starting Max Verstappen in the early stages of the race after the Dutchman surged from fifth to second on the first lap.

As Verstappen dropped out of the race on lap 11 due to issues with the battery store, Hamilton then cruised away from team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

Both Ferrari’s made poor starts, especially Sebastian Vettel who lost part of his front wing against Verstappen at Turn 1, forcing the championship leader to change to a two-stop strategy.

Force India made superb work of their afternoon challenging the sole surviving Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo for the final spot on the podium. They never quite made it past, leading to a titanic scrap as the recovering Vettel charged up behind them making their lives awfully difficult.

Lance Stroll managed to secure his first world championship points for Williams by finishing in ninth place after a superb performance, he climbed through the field which should do wonders for his confidence moving forward.

Toro Rosso suffered a miserable race after Carlos Sainz was out at Turn 3 after colliding with Romain Grosjean and Felipe Massa. Daniil Kvyat suffered a power unit failure while trying to serve a penalty in a pitstop.

Fernando Alonso was two laps away from scoring McLaren’s first points of the season, but another Honda power unit failure forced the two-time world champion to park his car at turn seven. Vandoorne could not extract the pace from his MCL32 after attempting a very long first stint on the ultrasoft tyres.

Nico Hulkenberg managed to bring the Renault home in eighth place to bring home more points for the French marque, while Jolyon Palmer yet again just missed out by finishing 11th.

Both Sauber’s struggled for pace all race long with Marcus Ericsson down in 13th place and Wehrlein in 15th, last of the running order.
