Five of Formula 1’s most famous super subs

Many thought Jenson Button had driven his last grand prix, but heading into the 2017 Monaco weekend he is back for a one off race as Fernando Alonso attempts to win the Indy 500.

Joining a long list of driver substitutions over the years, Button will drive the MCL32 for the first time in practice on Thursday around Monaco. He elected to miss out on the Bahrain test, the week after the announcement, and has only had time in the simulator to adjust to the 2017 regulations.

There have been drivers ruled out by injury, criminal charges, illness, contract complications, a lack of funding and the list continues. This is the first time in recent history though a top name driver is to be replaced due to racing in a ‘competing’ race.
