Robert Visoiu will return to the cockpit for the remainder of the 2017 FIA Formula 2 season, starting at the upcoming Monaco round where he will take over from Roberto Merhi at the Campos Racing squad.
Campos fielded Stefano Coletti at the season-opener in Bahrain, before electing to sign Merhi for the next round at the Circuit de Catalunya after Coletti withdrew due to family issues.
Visoiu will be the third driver to pilot the #12 Campos alongside regular driver Ralph Boschung.
The Romanian driver is no stranger to the series, having competed under its GP2 guise in 2015 and taken a best result of fifth in the Bahrain feature race.
“I am very happy to have the opportunity to join Campos Racing for the rest of the 2017 season,” said the 21-year-old.
“I have missed the competition immensely and I will do my best to get up to speed quickly.
“I need to thank Adrian Campos for his trust and guidance, which are essential to me. I am sure we can achieve great things together.”
Team boss Adrian Campos, speaking to Motorsport.com, admitted to finding it challenging to find a consistent second driver, citing budgeting issues as a problem.
“It was really difficult because there was not 20 drivers with a budget [for F2],” he said.
“We’ve had to work outside of the drivers, we had to find sponsors, we had to work really hard in order to be really strong for the next coming season with the new Formula 2 car.
“I want to be really strong to have a good job around the new Formula 2 car because what I like is to win races.”
Motorsport.com also reported that Renault F1 reserve driver Sergey Sirotkin was in contention to sign with Campos, before the Spanish squad signed Visoiu.
