MotoGP: Six reasons to watch in 2017

Winter really is a terrible time for motor racing fans. The end of a season brings with it the winter shutdown, and our favourite series go into hibernation for a few months while we’re left longing for it all to end so we can go racing again. Well, mercifully, the long winter break is almost at an end and the first tests ahead of the 2017 MotoGP World Championship are almost at hand.

Last year saw one of the most unpredictable, exciting and dramatic seasons in history. MotoGP underwent one of its biggest technical shake-ups since the introduction of the four-stroke era back in 2002, with Michelin replacing Bridgestone as sole tyre supplier and a new unified electronics package introduced for the entire grid.

As a result, coupled with some iffy weather from time to time, a sensational nine riders took victories in 2016, eight in a row from Mugello to Misano. We saw satellite riders take to the top step for the first time in 10 years, Briton victorious after 35, as well as Ducati and Suzuki ending their barren spells and four new names etch themeselves into the history books.

That’s not to mention the utterly epic on-track action we were lucky enough to witness and a fairly dramatic journey for Honda’s Marc Marquez to his third premier class crown.

Motorsport really didn’t get much better than the MotoGP World Championship in 2016. So it seems preposterous to claim that 2017 will be even more exciting. Well, with so many big-name rider moves as well as the debuts of some hugely talented rookies and a new team, we here at Read Motorsport reckon it will be.

Here are six reasons why you should be tuning into MotoGP in 2017.
