The curtain has closed on another breathtaking MotoGP season, possibly the most unpredictable in history. Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez claimed his third premier class crown with three races still to run, but his path to the world championship wasn’t exactly clear cut. A difficult RC213V required a change in approach, whilst the new Michelin tyres and unified software made every race weekend a step into the unknown.
For the first time in history nine riders took to the top step of the podium in a single season, the first eight of those coming one after the other, from Jorge Lorenzo in Mugello through to Dani Pedrosa at Misano. Along the way, four new names were etched into the history books, whilst Ducati and Suzuki became winners again.
Jack Miller took the first satellite win in 10 years in Holland, whilst Britain’s 35-year wait for a premier class victor ended in sensational fashion in the Czech Republic courtesy of Cal Crutchlow, the Briton adding one more to his tally in 2016 in Australia for good measure.
In the midfield, the battle was as fierce as ever. The likes of Pol Espargaro, Eugene Laverty, Hector Barbera and Danilo Petrucci impressing on their respective machines and troubling to establishment from time to time.
With such a competitive field, picking the 10 best from 2016 was no small task. After much deliberation, we’ve come up with who we thought were the best of the best of MotoGP this season.
