Brad Binder took a shock pole position on the final lap of qualifying as conditions changed through the session. Jorge Navarro looked set for pole for much of the 40-minute qualifying but will start 2nd alongside Francesco Bagnaia.
At the start of the session rain drops were just starting to fall and riders were unsure to whether use slick tyres or wet tyres. The track conditions deteriorated pretty quickly, all of those riders on slicks coming straight back into the pits.
The two Leopard Racing bikes of Fabio Quartararo and Joan Mir were the first riders to set times in seemingly the best conditions of the session as the rain continued to fall. Surprisingly, riders were able to improve as the conditions slowly got worse. Lorenzo Dalla Porta set the fastest time but then Jorge Navarro stole top spot just before a storm hit the track and the session had to be red flagged for bad weather.
With conditions very bad and only 19 minutes remaining, it seemed as if no one would be able to improve before the end the session. However, after the red flag the new track surface proved to have very high grip. There was more standing water than earlier in the session but some riders were able to find time.
In the last five minutes of the session Francesco Bagnaia manged to take top spot and a battle ensued with Jorge Navarro as they both improved their times lap on lap. At the chequered flag it was Navarro that came out on top, but then sixth-placed Brad Binder snatched pole position right at the death. It was a 2m26.268s that gave Binder pole by just under a tenth of a second, the top three well clear of everyone else.
On the second row was Dalla Porta by virtue of his time from much earlier in the session, Gabriel Rodrigo (who could’ve challenged for pole had it not been for a late crash) and Niccolo Antonelli. The third row consists of Bo Bendsneyder, Jorge Martin and Fabio Quartararo.
