GPC announce restrictions on aero upgrades for 2017

The Grand Prix Commission have announced several updates to the Technical Regulations for the 2017 season, chief amongst which is the restriction on aerodynamic upgrades for the MotoGP class.

With the winglets being banned for next year, the aerodynamic path that manufacturers have been led down has given rise to fears that this could continue further and potentially drive up costs. So, in the interest of cost saving, manufacturers have been limited in the number of aero updates they can introduce to their machine’s fairing or front mudguard in 2017.

An initial design will be homologated by Technical Direction before the Qatar Grand Prix. After that, manufacturers can only introduce one further aero update to the fairing and to the front mudguard per rider over the course of the season, should they so wish.

The GPC have also mandated airbags in riders’ leathers from the 2018 season in a bid to further improve safety. This is a technology that has steadily worked its way through the racing world, with airbags greatly reducing the number of shoulder and collarbone injuries sustained in crashes.

Also confirmed was the renewal of Liqui-Moly’s contract as the official oil supplier for the Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships from 2018 through to the end of 2020, as well as the opening of a tender process for a supplier of ECUs to the Moto2 class for the 2019 season.
