Formula E Season Two Review: ABT Schaeffler

Formula E Season Two Review: ABT Schaeffler

From the very first race of season two, ABT Schaeffler established themselves as the closest challengers to the mighty Renault e.dams team.

They won three races and achieved seven other podiums, the majority coming from their lead driver Lucas Di Grassi who drove his heart out to try to win the Drivers’ Championship.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian he would miss out by two points. The team also finished second in the Teams’ Championship, one place higher than they managed in season one.

For the second year in a row, Di Grassi lost a race win due to being disqualified for a technical infringement, and it once again cost him the championship.

Overall, it was another season of narrowly missing out on glory for the ABT Schaeffler team, but they proved they are one of the strongest teams in Formula E. They will undoubtedly be back with vengeance next season, once again looking to take over the Teams’ Championship from Renault e.dams.

Lucas Di Grassi

Championship Position: 2nd

Points: 155

Best Finish: 1st

Di Grassi arguably drove even better than champion Sebastien Buemi all season, at least until the very last race which saw him smash into the back of the Frenchman in an attempt to decide the Drivers’ Championship.

While his rival Buemi would throw away points and poles, Di Grassi would always be there to sweep up afterwards to keep adding to his points tally.

Towards the end of the season it seemed like ABT had leapfrogged e.dams. However normal service resumed in London and Di Grassi would ultimately miss out.

Although he finished first in four races, only three counted as he was stripped of his Mexico victory through no fault of his own.

The Brazilian was on the podium in every race he finished except for one, and surely it’s only a matter of time until his consistency in Formula E pays off.

Daniel Abt

Championship Position: 7th

Points: 68

Best Finish: 2nd

Abt really struggled early on in the season while his teammate won multiple races and was fighting for the championship. However, Abt turned over a new leaf in the latter races and played the support role very well.

He took three podiums in the last five races and earned a drive with the team for a third season, although the German still finished 85 points behind his teammate.

His season highlights include second place finishes in Berlin and London, as well as his first podium of the season in Long Beach from sixth on the grid.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Daniel Abt can continue to improve next season in Formula E.
