Rene Binder has confirmed on his Facebook page that he will take part in the seventh round of the 2016 GP2 Series at the Hockenheimring, Germany. He will take over the Carlin car #18 from Sergio Canamasas.
The 24-year-old will return to the GP2 Series for the second time this season after a first outing at his home race in Spielberg, Austria. Binder already has three full seasons in Formula 1’s feeder series under his belt: in 2012 and 2013 he competed for Venezuela GP Lazarus, his best result being a 23rd place in the championship with 11 points before switching to Arden International, with whom he finished the 2015 season in 25th place. In 2015, he also drove for Trident Racing in the first half of the season before being sidelined due to having to recover from an illness. He returned to the series with MP Motorsport for the Italian round of the GP2 championship, scoring points in both races, and remained with the team until the end of the season.
In 2016, Binder competes in the Formula V8 3.5 championship with Lotus, where he currently sits in fifth place in the championship standings with 4 podiums and 107 points to his name.
“Hockenheim has always been one of my favourite circuits so I want to thank Trevor Carlin for this great opportunity to race his car in Germany this weekend,” Binder told motorsport.com. “I look forward to racing and hope that we can get some good points together. Looking back to my last guest GP2 start in Spielberg, I have unfinished business. However, all in all my season so far is going well, given the four podiums that I have achieved in Formula V8 3.5. I feel in good shape and just want to make the best of it.”
