Italian Bastianini takes Moto3 pole at the Sachsenring

In a disrupted session at the Sachsenring, Enea Bastianini took pole late on for the German Grand Prix tomorrow.

With the rain forecast for tomorrow staying away, the conditions for qualifying were good for riding. The session began with some crashes, with Jorge Martin, Romano Fenati and Nicolo Antonelli all throwing it down the road. Antonelli broke his collarbone in the incident.

With 25 minutes to go the session was red flagged due to oil lying on the track. The cause of this was a fall from Danny Webb. The Britons engine had begun to spit out oil just before he crashed out of the session. Jules Danilo came into the pits reported the spill to the race direction, who brought out the red flags to bring action to a halt.

Qualifying was restarted after the oil was cleared, which gave the riders 25 minutes to dash for pole. They would leave it late to put in their fastest times, with half the field seemingly on their flying lap in the dying minutes of the session. Bastianini would take his second pole of the year, followed by fellow Italian Andrea Locatelli and Spanish rookie Aaron Canet.

Bo Bendsneyder achieved a career best start, with the Ajo KTM rider starting the German Grand Prix in fourth position. The Dutch rider was followed by Jorge Navarro and Championship leader Brad Binder.

Jules Danilo was seventh, with Scot John McPhee putting in a fantastic performance to end the session in a season best eighth on his Peugeot-Mahindra machine. He was followed by Hiroki Ono and Jorge Martin, who was able to get out again on his Aspar Mahindra.

The race tomorrow gets underway at 10:00 BST.
