Aspar’s Yonny Hernandez made most of the damp conditions in Mugello to top first practice for the Italian Grand Prix.
The main championship protagonists, Jorge Lorenzo, Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi all opted not to set a flying lap.
Hernandez was among a small selection of riders who went out early on wet tyres when conditions were at their worst.
Times began to tumble with 15 minutes of FP1 remaining with Scott Redding and Cal Crutchlow exchanging times at the top of the timesheets.
With five minutes remaining, the Colombian rider returned to the top of the timesheets, going 0.778s clear of Redding.
Crutchlow ended FP1 over a second off the pace set by Hernandez. Tech 3’s Bradley Smith was fourth fastest ahead of Yonny Hernandez.
Recently announced Yamaha rider for 2017, Maverick Vinales was sixth fastest ahead of Eugene Laverty.
Valentino Rossi made the most of the lack of dry running, performing practice starts at the end of the pitlane.
