GP2 2016: Our season predictions

The 2016 GP2 season gets underway this weekend, so we thought there would be no better time for us to put our necks on the line and fire out some predictions.

It’s the twelfth year of GP2 action and the last of an era. 2017 is set to see a merge between GP2 and FIA’s proposed Formula Two and with it hybrid engines and a raft of technical and sporting changes.

The fight to become the final GP2 champion of the V8 era is certainly going to be a close one with a number of drivers in with a very realistic chance of championship success.

For many drivers such as Pierre Gasly, Alex Lynn, and Sergey Sirotkin, a Formula One drive seems just a GP2 championship away.

2016 is likely to be many drivers final year in GP2 or their last chance to show the Formula One teams how good they really are.

For example, Mitch Evans who teams up with Campos Racing for 2016 and is looking to win the title in his fourth season in the sport while Raffaele Marciello is looking to show Ferrari were wrong to drop the Italian from their young driver academy.

However, it’s not all about the championship fight in 2016, a wave of new rookies such as GP3 graduates Luca Ghiotto, and Marvin Kirchhofer and the 2015 European Formula Three runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi, will be fighting it out for top rookie.
