Verstappen “frustrated” after finishing tenth

Max Verstappen was disappointed to have only finished tenth in the Australian Grand Prix, and now wants the team to focus on scoring more points at the next race.

After qualifying fifth Verstappen got off to a promising start, capitalising on Lewis Hamilton’s poor getaway and finding himself in fourth place after turn one.

He managed to keep the reigning World Champion behind him, with the Ferrari-powered Toro Rosso showing great straight-line speed.

“We had a great start to the race and were able to keep the Mercedes behind. The first pit-stop was also good,” the 18-year-old said.

“We had great pace and I didn’t have pressure from behind.”

However, during the second round of stops the Dutchman voiced his frustration in colourful fashion over the radio, after the team decided to pit Carlos Sainz Jr. a lap earlier.

Verstappen felt that this cost him the chance of a higher points finish, and was disappointed not to have done better.

“After the red flag we had a bit of a miscommunication for the second stop and it got very difficult,” he said.

“We have a fantastic car and to finish P10 here is not where we should be. I’m very disappointed as this was a great opportunity for us to get a very good result.

“Now we just need to focus on the next race [in Bahrain] and try and score more points than today.”
