Luthi fastest after day 2 of Moto2 Testing in Qatar

Day 2 for Moto2 testing at Qatar saw Swedish rider Thomas Luthi jump to the top of the timesheet.

The Moto2 class had the opportunity to get out on track first on day two of testing at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar, however not many ventured out during the first hour long session of three. By the end of day two of testing at Qatar, just one second covered the first thirteen riders.

Garage Plus Interwetten rider Thomas Luthi was fastest out of the eleven riders who made it out but was just under a second slower than his fastest time previously on day one. The majority of the Moto2 field made it out during the second session which meant he dropped to fourth but during session three he was able to produce the fast lap which left him fastest overall since the start of testing with a time of 1:59.680.

He was not, however, the first to break the two-minute barrier at Qatar, it was Dynavolt Intact GP Team’s new recruit Jonas Folger. He was soon joined by IDEMITSU Honda Team rider Takaaki Nakagami who also broke through; the leader switched a few times but it was Folger who was fastest by the end of session two. He was able to improve on this time slightly during the last session leaving him second overall with a time of 1:59.806. Nakagami was unable to improve on his time of 1:59.933 which left him second after session two and fourth overall.

British Federal Oil Gresini rider Sam Lowes continued to look strong, he was the only other rider to break the two-minute barrier and his time set in session 3 of 1:59.926 left him third overall; he had installed a softer swing arm and completed his fastest lap of the test on a 16 lap tyre at the end of a long run.

Alex Rins was one of three riders who were unable to improve on their time set previously on day one of testing at Qatar, but his time of 2:00.071 on his Paginas Amarillas HP40 bike that left him top on day one resulted in him being fifth overall after day two.

Moto2 Champion Danny Kent gained one place on the timesheet; the British rider is new to the Moto2 class after his Leopard Racing team expanded to their team to run in the Moto2 class as well as the Moto3 from this season. He was able to improve his time by just less than half a second finishing ninth with a time of 2:00.519.

The top Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider was Franco Morbidelli in tenth place after day two. The team won the Championship last year with Tito Rabat on board but are just less than a second slower than the front runners. Morbidelli’s injured teammate Alex Marquez is continuing to test despite the injuries to his left wrist sustained in private testing.

New to the Speed Up Racing Team Simone Corsi finished the fastest Speed Up bike in the eleventh, Xavi Vierge was the fastest Tech 3 and Efren Vazquez on the only Suter in the field was unable to improve on his position from day one.
