ART Grand Prix GP2 team have confirmed the signing of Russian Sergey Sirotkin for the 2016 GP2 season.
The youngster, who has been tipped to reach Formula One in the future, has climbed through the motorsport ranks in order to get to the point which he is at now. Sirotkin has raced in series such as Formula 3, AutoGP and the Formula Renault 3.5 series.
The Russian finished third in the drivers’ championship on his debut series in GP2. He also has experience in racing Formula One cars, after taking some laps back in 2014 at just 18 years old.
Sébastian Phillipe, the ART GP team manager, said his team “were very impressed by [Sirotkin’s] début in such a competitive championship.”
“Sergey is both fast over one lap and strong in the race.”
“After its success in 2015 in both categories, drivers and team, ART Grand Prix now faces the big challenge of remaining the leader in GP2.”
“We are therefore very pleased to have him with us and be able to tackle the 2016 championship season with the highest of ambitions.”
Sirotkin also exclaimed his own opinion on the move, saying “I am very excited to be joining ART Grand Prix because it is a big family which has the culture if motorsport.”
“This is a great opportunity for me because ART Grand Prix has shown many times that it is the best place for a young driver to be and I intend to make the most of this opportunity while doing the best possible job for the team.”
Sirotkin will no longer face the challenge of 2015 World Champion, Stoffel Vandoorne; this is because he is no longer permitted to participate in the sport.
