Verstappen ‘overestimated grip’ in FP2

Verstappen ‘overestimated grip’ in FP2

Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen says he overestimated the amount of grip which led to his heavy crash in second practice at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Verstappen lost the rear at the final corner early on in FP2, this ruled him out for the rest of the session putting him on the back foot going into qualifying on Saturday. Despite a disappointing second practice, Verstappen topped first practice ahead of Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat.

The Dutchman will now have to rely on teammate Carlos Sainz’s data as they prepare themselves for tomorrow.

“To end the session in P1 is nice of course, and it means that the car is working well and I enjoy driving here.

“Unfortunately, during my first push-lap in FP2 I suddenly lost the rear and crashed in the last corner – I think it’s maybe just a combination of cold tyres and the track still being a bit damp. I think I overestimated the grip. Tonight we have time to focus on all the data from Carlos’ FP2 to prepare ourselves for tomorrow.”
