Pirelli aiming for two stops in Mexico

Motorsport Director of Pirelli, Paul Hembery says they are aiming for a two-stop strategy to be the main strategy choice by the teams this weekend in Mexico.

Formula One heads to Mexico for the first time since 1992 to the renovated Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. With no tyre data or track information available to Formula One’s official tyre supplier, the task for the Italian tyre maker is greater than usual.

Pirelli will bring the yellow-marked soft tyre and the white-marked medium tyre to Mexico and Motorsport Director of Pirelli, Paul Hembery believes a two-stop strategy will be the main strategy adopted by all of the teams.

“It’s very exciting for us to come to Mexico, to a brand new circuit but one that is steeped in tradition at the same time. Nominating the compounds for a new track is not without its challenges, but simulation – one of the most important areas of growth in Formula One technology recently – is very accurate now.

Hembery admits the tyre selection this weekend may be conservative considering it is the first year at a new track. Pirelli brought soft and medium tyres to the inaugural race in Sochi in 2014, which ultimately proved to be too conservative.

“Although it’s inevitable that we would incline towards a more conservative choice during the first year at a new track.

“As always, we are still aiming for two pit stops at the Mexican Grand Prix, but the uncertain weather that is affecting a large part of North America during the next week or so will clearly have a big influence.”
