Marco Sorensen will contest his first full season of GP2 in 2015, after joining the series halfway through 2014 with MP Motorsport. He will challenge for the title with Carlin alongside Julian Leal.

The Danish driver made his racing debut back in 1998 when he joined the karting circuit. He began single seater racing in 2006 when he joined the Formula Ford Denmark series, taking third in the championship at his second attempt in 2007 before taking fourth in the ADAC Formel Masters championship even though he only completed half of the season.

In 2009, Sorensen was placed on the Renault Driver Development Programme, which also helped launch the careers of Davide Valsecchi and Charles Pic. The same year he moved up to Formula Renault 2.0, where he competed in the Eurocup and the Northern European Cup, finishing third overall in the latter.

At the end of the year, the programme was discontinued due to financial problems, but Sorensen was able to salvage his career after signing with Brandl Motorsport in the German Formula Three series for 2010. The following year, he was embroiled in a season-long battle with Richie Stanaway for the title, eventually losing out at the penultimate race.

For 2012, the Dane was offered a drive in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series by Lotus, where he was partnered with Stanaway. It didn’t take long for him to secure his first win, after a strong race at the fourth race of the season in Spa. Reliability problems hampered further wins and a title charge, and Sorensen ended the year sixth in the standings.

2013 didn’t get much better for the Dane either, as constant engine problems halted any chance of taking the title, and all he got to show for it were two wins from the double header at the Red Bull Ring. The same year, Sorensen became one of the official test drivers for the Lotus Formula 1 team.

After an even more disappointing Formula Renault 3.5 campaign in 2014, where Sorensen picked up a solitary podium in Monaco, the Dane made the switch to GP2 to replace Tio Ellinas at MP Motorsport mid-season, and immediately impressed, scoring points at every circuit bar one, including a popular victory in Sochi.

This upturn in form led to Carlin signing Sorensen for the 2015 championship, where he expects to fight for more victories and the championship.

“I am hugely excited to be joining Carlin for the 2015 season in GP2. The team has a great reputation and I feel I have some unfinished business in the series,” explained Sorensen.

“Together I expect us to be aiming for top results. My thanks go out to Gravity Sports Management and Saxo Bank, without whose support this attack on the GP2 championship would not be possible. We’re focussed on working hard now to prepare for the season ahead and the first tests in Abu Dhabi.”
