Formula One World Championship, Rd9, British Grand Prix, Race Day, Silverstone, England, Sunday 6 July 2014.Drivers have been reminded by the FIA that when rejoining the circuit if they run off, to be careful and reduce the risk of an accident after Kimi Raikkonen’s big shunt at Silverstone earlier this month.

The Finn ran wide at turn five on the opening lap at the British GP, rejoined and dropped the car when he came back on the track crashing into a barrier. He also collected former team-mate Felipe Massa and causing a one hour delay as the barrier that Raikkonen hit, needed to be repaired.

Despite some people believing that Raikkonen deserved a penalty for putting other drivers in danger, but the FIA decided not to punish the Ferrari driver believing that any other driver would rejoin the circuit in the same manner.

Race director, Charlie Whiting has spoken to all 22 drivers and has made it clear about how they are to rejoin if they go off the circuit.

In an interview with Autosport, Whiting said: “There is no policy change, the standard policy is written in the rules, any driver having left the track may rejoin but must do so safely and without gaining any advantage.

“It was my view that Kimi did not rejoin very safely and should have taken more care.

“All the drivers were reminded that when rejoining across grass they must take care and cannot expect it to be manicured like a football pitch. It simply isn’t feasible.”
