Max Verstappen is back in Malaysia. He returns as Sepang’s most recent grand prix winner, and he arrived in typically dry form. The Max Verstappen Sepang story this week turned on nerve as much as pace. The four times champion joked that months of mental bracing mattered more than any physical prep for the heat.
He also used his paddock return to spell out exactly where Red Bull stand in 2026. They’re strong enough for regular podiums. They are not built to challenge for the title, and he said so plainly.
Paddock Arrival Details and Recent Form
Verstappen has not raced in Malaysia for several years. The layout caught him out. Speaking to the media at Sepang, he admitted: “I mean, to be honest, I walked into the paddock this morning and I had no idea where I had to go! So yeah, it’s been a long time.”
On the heat itself, he leaned into the joke. Plenty of drivers have struggled with Sepang’s climate over the years; Verstappen chose humour instead. “I think I had four or five months of very intense preparation. Yeah, deep mental preparation of not giving an F…!” he said, when asked how he had readied himself for the tropical conditions.
The light tone sits next to a genuinely strong run of form. Verstappen has finished on the podium in six of the last eight grand prix weekends in 2026. That sequence has kept Red Bull in the mix at the sharp end of races. There’s been no win to show for it yet. “It’s true that we are scoring quite a few podiums now, but I want to win,” he said.
Red Bull Title Reality and Tactical Progress
Asked directly about the championship, Verstappen did not dress it up. “We’re anyway not fighting for the championship, so for us it’s a big learning curve. But, of course, the last few weekends have already been a lot better than the start of the season,” he said.
That matches what Red Bull have shown all year. They are using races to develop the car rather than chase a title that is already gone. Verstappen pointed to Baku as the clearest proof of what the car can do when it all comes together, calling it theoretically Red Bull’s best chance of winning a race in 2026. Our missed victory chance in Baku covered how close that weekend came to delivering a win, and our recent Baku performance details put the final gap to George Russell into proper context.
Six podiums from eight races is real progress. It will not satisfy him on its own, though. He made that much clear.
Upcoming Timeline for Malaysia Weekend
Attention now turns to the rest of the weekend. Practice, qualifying and the race itself are still to come at Sepang. The Max Verstappen Sepang weekend gives Red Bull three more sessions to build on recent gains, even with the title already out of reach.
Verstappen will look to add to his six podiums from the last eight races. He may yet convert one into the win he says he still wants. Qualifying and the grand prix will show whether Sepang’s heat, and all that preparation, have paid off.
