Update: Kimi Antonelli Leads F1 Standings Ahead of Zandvoort
This update was published on 23 September 2026. Kimi Antonelli sits top of the Formula 1 drivers’ championship in only his second season at Mercedes. His rise is at the centre of the biggest kimi antonelli motorsport story of the year. That lead has held firm since the sport returned from its summer break, with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort run from 21 to 23 August.
Antonelli took the seat left empty when Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari. Mercedes have said clearly that they will not favour one driver over the other. That neutral approach makes sense once you know where this story really starts. It begins not in Formula 1, but in his father’s garage in Italy.
Born in the Garage: Kimi Antonelli’s Early Motorsport Upbringing
Kimi Antonelli’s route into racing was set before he could talk. His parents, Marco and Veronica, ran a team business, and baby Kimi spent his earliest days around it rather than at home. Marco has explained just how early that exposure began. Kimi was just 15 days old when he started spending time in the garage, hearing the sound of the engine and smelling the exhaust.
By the age of three, Kimi already wanted to drive. His father brought home a simulator from the Bologna Motor Show, and it soon became part of their evening routine. “Each evening, Kimi wanted to drive,” Marco recalled.
The sessions were not always smooth. Marco remembers nodding off after early shifts at work. One night, that led to a crash.
I remember one night I started to fall asleep because I had been at work very early and we had a crash because I didn’t brake when we arrived at the end of the straight.
The Lamborghini Session at Adria Circuit
The clearest sign of Kimi’s talent came when he was ten, at the Adria circuit. After a day of karting, Marco put a simple question to his son.
Do you want to try the Lamborghini?
Marco strapped Kimi onto his lap in the car. Kimi steered and changed gear, while his father worked the throttle and brakes. “We started to drive, step by step, faster, faster, faster,” Marco said, and the pair built up to speeds of 320 km/h on the straight.
The car began to slide.
The car had a lot of oversteer. Kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly, then I went on the throttle, Kimi finished the oversteer, changed gear, and went.
Marco eventually pulled into the pits. “OK, stop, because it has now become dangerous,” he told his son.
It was only later, watching the footage back, that Marco understood what he had seen.
But when I saw the video, 10 years old, on my leg, oversteer, everything perfect, I said: ‘Maybe he has something special.’
Kimi Antonelli Motorsport Career: From Garage Driving to F1 Leader
The Kimi Antonelli motorsport career started in that garage, long before he ever saw a race track. Hearing engines from 15 days old and driving a simulator at three gave him a feel for car control years ahead of most young drivers.
That grounding mattered when Mercedes needed a new driver after Lewis Hamilton left for Ferrari. Rather than ease him in gradually, the team gave Antonelli a race seat straight away. He has repaid that trust by leading the championship in only his second season.
Formula 1 has always fed ideas back into ordinary road cars, from hybrid power to aerodynamics. We’ve looked before at some of that road car performance technology, the same kind of engineering built on the car control skills Antonelli learned as a boy.
Mercedes have stressed again that they will not favour one driver over the other as the title race continues.
What Happens Next in the F1 Title Fight
Attention now turns to the remaining rounds of the season. Antonelli must defend his lead race by race, and the pressure will only grow. Former Mercedes champion Nico Rosberg has already warned about that pressure, and we covered his comments in Rosberg’s title fight warning.
Mercedes’ neutral approach means Antonelli gets no special treatment against his teammate, a stance the team have held all season. Readers wanting the fuller story behind his rise, including how his father first put him behind the wheel, can find it in our original Antonelli profile.
