Adrian Newey has tied Aston Martin’s planned Hungarian Grand Prix upgrade to Fernando Alonso’s 2027 Formula 1 future, saying the package could help keep the Spaniard in the cockpit for another season.
The Aston Martin managing technical partner is banking on a significant mid-season package after a grim 2026 campaign in which the Silverstone team has fallen to the back of the competitive order. Alonso, now 44, remains central to the project because of his experience and feedback, but the team’s lack of progress has turned his next contract call into an urgent performance test.
Hungary package becomes Alonso proof point
Newey’s comments, reported by Autosport’s Aston Martin update, put a clear date on the pressure. Aston Martin is aiming its next major step at the Hungaroring, with aerodynamic revisions and weight reduction rather than a small incremental tweak.
That matters because Alonso is not short of motivation; he is short of evidence that Aston Martin can give him a car worth extending his career for. Newey described the two-time world champion as a major development asset, but also admitted the upgrade must show “clear, tangible progress” if the team wants him committed beyond 2026.
For Aston Martin, Hungary is now more than an upgrade weekend. It is a credibility check on the Newey era, Honda partnership and Alonso’s patience all at once.
