Mercedes have withdrawn their Right of Review request over George Russell’s penalty-hit 2026 Monaco Grand Prix result, ending their attempt to revisit a costly race for the British driver.
Russell had been punished for a pit lane speeding infringement in Monaco and then received a drive-through penalty after the original sanction was not served correctly. He ultimately fell to 12th, having earlier been in the fight for a podium finish.
The move followed Alpine’s successful review of Pierre Gasly’s similar Monaco penalty, which restored the Frenchman to third place. Mercedes initially lodged its own petition with the FIA, but has now stepped back from the process, according to Formula 1’s official update.
Mercedes Shift Focus After FIA Talks
Mercedes said discussions with the FIA and Formula 1 had shown a willingness to examine the unusual Monaco circumstances and address the factors behind them. That was enough for the team to decide that pushing the review further would not serve either Mercedes or the wider sport.
The decision leaves Russell’s Monaco result unchanged, but the episode still matters. It keeps attention on how pit lane timing was measured, why multiple drivers were affected, and how the FIA prevents a repeat when fine margins can decide podiums, points and title momentum.
For Mercedes, the immediate priority is now to turn the page before Austria, rather than keep Monaco’s legal argument alive.
