- NASCAR has decided to pause the finale venue rotation for the 2027 season.
- 2026 year was supposed to be the starting of the finale rotation.
- Fans have mixed reactions to the news.
NASCAR implemented several changes for the current season after taking input from veteran drivers, NASCAR fans, and media.
The sanctioning body returned to the chase format after moving away from the elimination-style format. Along with that shift, NASCAR also acted on Denny Hamlin’s suggestion to rotate the finale venue, aimed at preventing any single team or driver from repeatedly gaining an edge at a familiar track and stacking wins based on track-specific strength.
However, heading into the 2027 season, the sanctioning body has now decided to pause that rotation plan.
NASCAR pauses the venue rotation for the finale in 2027
Phoenix has served as a stronghold for Team Penske drivers, with Joey Logano in particular converting that advantage into two championships despite uneven results across seasons. The 2026 race marks the start of a rotating system for the season finale.
After the chase format was brought back into the sport this year, NASCAR had initially leaned toward rotating the finale venue to maintain competitive balance and keep fans guessing about the next title decider.
Now, for the 2027 season, NASCAR has decided to keep Homestead-Miami Speedway as the finale venue again, continuing from 2026 and holding the rotation idea in abeyance.
Veteran NASCAR reporter Kelly Crandall reported this development, noting that Steve O’Donnell disclosed the plan during an exchange with Fox Sports. She posted the update on her official X handle, stating:
“Steve O’Donnell tells Fox Sports that it’s likely Homestead-Miami will be the championship finale for two years as they continue to evaluate other markets to rotate the finale to.”
Return to Homestead?
While the original framework suggested that rotation would begin immediately after 2026, newer updates point toward Homestead-Miami retaining the finale in 2027 as well, with the formal rotation expected to begin in 2028.
Prior to this, Mike Forde had also referenced the same direction back in February. With the 2027 schedule still unreleased, expectations had been building around possible changes once the calendar was finalised. Speaking on the “Hauler Talk” podcast, he had said, “The plan would be to have the season finale again at Homestead in 2027, and then we’ll see what the rotation looks like.”
Homestead-Miami previously hosted the championship finale for 18 consecutive seasons from 2002 to 2019 before the event moved to Phoenix Raceway from 2020 through 2025.
The venue has consistently been associated with competitive multi-groove racing due to its progressive banking and aged surface, and it has often been referenced in discussions around balanced championship-deciding conditions.
Fans’ reaction to the news:
Fan reactions have been split, with some showing approval of Homestead-Miami retaining the finale slot, while others have pushed alternative locations into the discussion.
One fan commented, “I feel like Homestead & Charlotte should be the only 2 locations,” while another said, “Just leave it at Homestead it should have never left in the first place.”
A third fan added, “I would keep it at Miami unless they got to Charlotte or Vegas.”
Several other suggestions followed from the fanbase. One read, “Hear me out. Kansas Speedway. It will be chilly in November, but that track always puts on a show. It’s worth trying at least 1 year.”
Another added, “Chicago street course finale might need snow tyres.”
A further comment stated, “Since its nba draft lottery day. We should do a lottery with all tracks eligible.”
One more fan wrote, “If they’re open to it speedway motorsports hosting. Vegas and Charlotte are great options.”
