Why Canada is a make-or-break race for George Russell’s F1 title hopes

  • Russell trails championship leader Antonelli by 20 points after four races.
  • Montreal offers Russell chance to respond, but Antonelli arrives on 3-win streak.
  • Defeat at one of his strongest circuits could signal a shift in power at Mercedes.

George Russell came into the 2026 Formula 1 season as the clear title favourite. He had a strong Mercedes car, plus a young and relatively inexperienced teammate alongside him.

But four races in, the 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship by 20 points. Sky Sports F1 lead commentator David Croft believes the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal could be the moment that defines whether Russell can still mount a serious title challenge.

Russell’s early momentum has slipped away

Russell won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix from pole position. He also took a sprint race victory in China. Those early results made him look every bit the title contender many expected him to be.

Then things changed. Antonelli won his first F1 race in China and followed it up with victories in Japan and Miami.

Three consecutive wins moved him ahead of Russell in the standings and made him the bookmakers’ new favourite for the title.

The gap between them in Miami told a sharp story. Antonelli took pole and won the race. Russell finished fourth, 43 seconds behind. Yet Russell has had genuine misfortune along the way.

Qualifying problems in China, an ill-timed safety car in Japan, and a Miami circuit that does not suit his driving style have all worked against him.

Russell has not hidden behind those problems, but he has acknowledged them.

“He is a fantastic driver and has been exceptionally quick since day one,” Russell told Sky Sports F1 after Miami. “I still have confidence in myself. I’ve been there before. I haven’t forgotten how to drive.”

Croft says Canada is a ‘massive weekend’ for Russell

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal holds particular significance for Russell. He won there last year.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has identified it as one of Russell’s strongest tracks. Croft made clear that those facts raise the stakes enormously.

“I would want Montreal to come next weekend if I was George Russell,” Croft said on the Sky Sports F1 Show.

“I wouldn’t want to be waiting a couple of weeks, dwelling on what happened in Miami and thinking about how big Canada is now becoming.”

Croft then framed what a poor result in Montreal could mean.

“If George doesn’t beat Kimi with Mercedes upgrades that are coming, and worth quite a bit from what we’re led to believe, on a track that he regards as one of his best, and Toto Wolff says is one of his best, then the alarm bells really start to ring for me,” he said.

“There’s still a long way to go in the season, but this is a massive weekend for George Russell. He needs that commanding performance, but Kimi’s on a roll.”

The Bono factor: Russell is not just racing Antonelli

There is another layer to this battle beyond raw pace. Antonelli has Peter “Bono” Bonnington as his race engineer.

Bonnington guided Lewis Hamilton through six of his seven world championships. For the 2026 season, he has also taken on the role of Head of Race Engineering at Mercedes.

Croft has watched that partnership develop over the opening races and believes it gives Antonelli a significant advantage.

“George is not just racing against Kimi. He’s racing against what I think is a very good new partnership,” Croft said.

“Bono was coaching Kimi lap-by-lap. The reassurance that comes from the pit wall, the guidance that comes from the pit wall. He’s got an excellent comfort blanket, safety net, coach, advisor, guru, whatever you want to call it, in his corner.”

Croft added that Bonnington’s experience at the sharp end of a title fight is itself a weapon.

“Bono has been there with championship-winning seasons and knows how to take the pressure off it,” he said.

“It’s not just George against Kimi, it’s George against a partnership there, and that’s going to take some cracking.”

Seven-time grand prix winner Juan Pablo Montoya agreed.

“I think Bono is a big part of it,” Montoya said. “Bono has won so much with Lewis, and I think he’s moulding Kimi and working with Kimi, just bits and pieces.”

Wolff backs Russell to fight back

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has not wavered in his belief that Russell can turn this around.

“George is a killer. What makes him so good is he never stops fighting or attacking,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1. “He’s going for this and won’t leave a stone unturned.”

Wolff also suggested Russell would not let Miami linger in his mind.

“That’s it. Tick the box. He’s looking forward to Montreal,” Wolff said. “I have no doubt the two of them will fight for points throughout the season.”

Former world champion David Coulthard offered a more cautious read of the situation.

“What’s absolutely clear is the longer this continues, the more the pressure ramps up for George, because he is more experienced, clearly a fast racing driver, and won grands prix,” Coulthard said.

Mercedes expects to bring significant upgrades to Montreal. Russell has the tools, the track record at this circuit, and the team’s backing. But if Antonelli beats him again in Canada, the questions about who truly leads this team will grow harder to ignore.
