  • Elliott’s Texas win moves him to third in the standings, closing the gap on Reddick.
  • Spire’ Hocevar and Suarez solidified their top-16 spots, while Bell dropped to 13th.
  • Logano fell outside the playoff cutline, as Jones gained ground with a stage win.

NASCAR’s return to the Lone Star State after the COTA, Austin feature, didn’t just deliver another chaotic, caution-filled Sunday. In fact, the recently concluded Wurth 400 quietly reshaped the championship picture in ways that might matter far more come playoff time.

Riddled with strategy gambles, late-race drama, and the series ‘Most Popular Driver’ Chase Elliott returning to Victory Lane, the 267-lap ringer had all the elements of a runaway blockbuster. And after 11 races this season, the NASCAR Cup Series standings are starting to draw clear lines between contenders, pretenders, and those already fighting to stay relevant.

Chase Elliott gains, Tyler Reddick holds firm at the top after Texas shake-up

At the front, not much has changed. 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick continues to lead the standings with 526 points, owing to his splendid season-opening performance. While he finished a solid fourth at TMS, it came with a slight dent to what had been a commanding lead.

That cushion shrank by a single point, with his boss and Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin finishing second, now sitting 109 points behind.

Behind them, Chase Elliott was the biggest winner in more ways than one. His Texas victory did more than just add another trophy to his resume. In fact, it pushed the No. 9 driver up to third in the standings at 409 points, now 117 behind Reddick. In a season where momentum has been hard to sustain, and the Toyotas were dominating weekends, Elliott suddenly looks like the driver building it at the right time.

On the flip side, the rest of the top five saw some subtle but important reshuffling. 2023 Cup champion Ryan Blaney slipped one spot to fourth after a relatively quiet day (P10), now 155 points off the lead. Meanwhile, Chris Buescher climbed to fifth, continuing his quietly efficient season despite the lack of a win.

Then there’s Spire Motorsports phenom Carson Hocevar, who continues to be one of the season’s standout stories. Sitting sixth in points, just 193 back, the 23-year-old driver proved that his Talladega win was no fluke, with a commendable P7 finish on Sunday.

Mid-pack chaos, DNFs shake up NASCAR playoff picture after Texas

In a race that saw as many cautions as Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts feature – seven – and almost two dozen lead changes, Texas exposed just how fragile a strong points position can be.

Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing was arguably the biggest casualty of the weekend. Entering the race inside the top 10, Bell’s early exit after wrecking from the lead sent him tumbling four spots down to 13th.

Similarly, three-time Cup champion Joey Logano now finds himself on the wrong side of that cut line in 17th, just outside the top 16. DNFs have plagued his season, and Texas only added to the frustration after the Team Penske ace made contact with Cole Custer on the pit road. The impact damaged the No. 22 Ford and eventually relegated him to the 37th spot, above Bell.

Just ahead of him, Chase Briscoe holds the final playoff spot in 16th with 242 points, but the margin is anything but comfortable.

Meanwhile, drivers like Daniel Suarez did exactly what was needed, staying steady. Sitting 14th in the standings with 271 points, Suarez’s sixth-place finish at Texas kept him safely above the cut line. As for his teammate, Hocevar, who started from the pole, a seventh-place finish moved him up two spots to sixth.

Further down, the biggest positive mover was Erik Jones. The Legacy Motor Club driver’s Stage 1 win at the quad oval track proved crucial, helping him jump four spots from 26th to 22nd in the standings.

Then we have drivers like Kyle Busch, who continue to hover near the bottom of the table. Sitting 26th with just 182 points, his season has yet to find any real rhythm. Texas, despite starting out well for him, only added to what has been a frustrating campaign with its late-race incident.

Now, with the series heading to Watkins Glen International for its next road course test on May 10, the margins will only get tighter, and the stakes, even higher.
