- George Russell and Kimi Antonelli ignite fierce intra-team Mercedes title battle.
- Helmut Marko questions if Antonelli can maintain momentum in European rounds.
- Youngest pole sitter Antonelli leads Russell by nine points after early dominance.
2026 seems to be the new 2016, with the Silver Arrows battle overtaking the grid, with just three races in. The only difference is that this time there’s no Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, just two very young drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, whose rivalry is healthy for now. Still, it remains uncertain what it might become when the title is at stake.
Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko offered his stance on a potential WDC battle between Mercedes drivers. While he’s impressed by Antonelli’s performance in recent races, he wants to see if the young driver is still able to manage the momentum in European races, where his performance last year has struggled a bit. However, he warns that he won’t be an easy catch for his very experienced teammate, Russell.
Helmut Marko comments on a potential Mercedes WDC
In a conversation at Austria’s national broadcaster ORF, Marko appreciated Antonelli’s talent and impressive performances over the last two races, where he secured back-to-back wins. He said, “His whole demeanour is very refreshing. He was already incredibly fast everywhere in the junior categories, and it’s good to see a young driver like that coming up.”
However, he is eager to see whether Antonelli maintains his strong performance across the many races, specifically in Europe, which proved to be challenging for him last year. “The question is whether he can maintain that speed and performance over the course of the season.
Russell is certainly the more experienced driver, and last year, once the races moved to Europe, Antonelli suffered a significant slump,” he added. However, he remains excited to see how the WDC fight will play out within the team. He’s confident that this year the title will go to either of the Mercedes drivers.
WDC battle shifted way too quickly
Russell was already a championship favourite way before the season officially began. And he exactly lived up to the hype, starting from the first race of the season (Australia), when he secured a win. As the season moved to China, he won the Sprint race, but came 2nd in the final race.
Whereas Antonelli went on a quest to collect achievements, not for the history books, in qualification and GP. How? The young driver became the youngest-ever pole sitter and the second youngest after Max Verstappen to secure a maiden win.
However, Antonelli didn’t stop there, as his dominance continued with him winning the Japan GP as well, comfortably snatching away his experienced teammate, Russell’s lead. Currently, Russell is 9 points away from his championship lead teammate.
With the two races having been cancelled and the calendar having shrunk to 22 rounds, it would be interesting to see how the Mercedes war pans out. However, this is Formula 1, and anything can happen. Who knows, this intra-team battle could also potentially face an unexpected threat from rivals like Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren, or Red Bull Racing.
