The Super Mario Galaxy Movie voice cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Brie Larson, Jack Black, Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Keegan-Michael Key, recently attended the F1 Japanese Grand Prix.
The star-studded presence immediately drew the attention of fans, who were quick to point out that the Mario Kart comparison had suddenly got too real.
This reference is a controversial take tied to the sport’s new regulations, which have left the paddock divided. Some believe Mario Kart joke matches the racing style following the introduction of the 50–50 power split, while others perceive it as a disrespect toward the sport.
The Super Mario Galaxy movie cast spotted at Ferrari Garage
Scuderia Ferrari took to social media to share a video of the cast’s presence in their garage. In the video, Lewis Hamilton could be seen chit-chatting with the actors before they all posed for a group photo.
Apart from this, F1 also posted the video of the cast, who were enjoying their time at the event, as they danced and vibed to the music together. This unexpected crossover drew hilarious reactions from fans. The cast made their way to the paddock after attending the movie’s premiere in Japan.
Helmed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the animated movie follows Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Day), who embark on a quest to outer space with their friends, Yoshi (Donald Glover), Princess Peach (Taylor Joy) and Toad (Key).
They also come across Rosalina (Brie Larson). Along the way, they face multiple challenges while having to battle it out against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.
The origin of the F1 Mario Kart joke
The Mario Kart joke could be seen as a subtle shade or a funny take on the F1’s new regulations, whose usage dates back to the Australian Grand Prix in March 2026.
During an intense battle between Charles Leclerc and George Russell, the Ferrari driver described his experience on the radio as “like the mushroom in Mario Kart.” Here, he was referring to the overtake button and boost buttons, which work similarly to the popular game, where the mushrooms power the kart’s speed.
It started as a random, funny take on the F1’s latest feature, but went viral immediately, with many drivers bringing up this reference in the interviews.
While many perceived it as a joke, some members of the community took offence, viewing the comparison as lacking respect for the sport and its competitive integrity. As the debate around the new regulations continues, it remains to be seen if the FIA manages to overturn the image of the sport from what it has become in the eyes of many.
