  • Silver Arrows channel “Toto-coded” energy through new front wing aesthetics.
  • Godzilla-themed Haas and calligraphic Racing Bulls join Mercedes.

Mercedes F1 team’s brand-new livery for the Japanese Grand Prix has created a frenzy among fans, who can’t help but draw comparisons to the famous ‘Alpha Wolf’ meme.

Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli’s W-17s will be adorned with a wolf-themed front wing, perfectly showcasing the beast eyes upfront, which gives off a dominant and silent confidence energy. At the same time, it also channels Toto-coded energy, subtly referencing the team principal’s excellent leadership, which has also brought Mercedes to the top once again this year.

Since the start of the season, Mercedes showcased strong performance from both cars and drivers, securing a 1-2 in two Grand Prixs. Currently, they stand at the top in the drivers’ and team standings, with Ferrari catching up to them.

With many claiming that the team has developed technically “a rocketship,” the car was under scrutiny initially for its engine and now for its front wing, which just got a new decoration with updated livery.

What’s an ‘Alpha Wolf’ meme, and why is it referenced to Mercedes livery?

Not many of the audience are familiar with the meme culture, as Gen Z, every other day comes out with a new phrase or a hilarious take, whose origin story could be hard to track.

Interestingly, the ‘Alpha Wolf’ meme with the song ‘Animals’ by Maroon 5 has been in F1 fandom for a long time. Initially, it was used on Lance Stroll when he commented that he would like to name his team, “one man wolf pack,” sparking massive memes.

Now the same meme has resurfaced again upon Mercedes’ reveal of the wolf-inspired livery, as it funnily channels dominant vibes and the lone wolf pack aesthetics. Moreover, it’s also projecting dominant leadership, confidence, and, of course, main character vibes while matching the high and predatory energy of the Maroon 5 lyrics.

However, if one sees it from a Japanese perspective, the wolf actually represents strength, spirituality, and protection in their culture, and is not perceived as aggressive or malicious.

Apart from the aforementioned references, many fans are also interpreting in several unique ways through memes and discussions, which indeed is quite interesting to see.

Several F1 teams are headed to Japan with interesting liveries

Mercedes has, in fact, gone a whole wolf mode ahead of the Japanese grand prix, given they not just unveiled the unique livery, but also suits, helmets, and merch of the same theme.

Apart from them, Haas has partnered with  TOHO CO., LTD, the studio behind the beloved Godzilla franchise, bringing the film-themed livery to the track, with a white, black and red colour combination. The livery aptly references “the King of Monsters.”

Racing Bulls, through their livery, gave a sweet tribute to the host nation, collaborating with Japanese calligrapher Bisen Aoyagi for bringing the combination of the “energy of F1 with the elegance of traditional Japanese shodo calligraphy.”
