Ferrari arrives at the 2026 F1 season opener in Melbourne with momentum and belief. The team set the fastest lap of pre-season testing in Bahrain and drew praise from rivals for its race pace.
The Australian Grand Prix on March 8 at Albert Park will mark the first race under F1’s 2026 technical rules. Ferrari enters that race with a new car, the SF-26, and two drivers with title ambitions: Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
For the Tifosi, there is a lot to look forward to. Ferrari topped testing times and logged strong race simulations, pushing the team into early championship conversations after a difficult 2025 season. Betting markets now rate Ferrari as a leading contender for the constructors’ title.
Here is ReadMotorsport’s preview for Ferrari’s 2026 campaign.
A year two reset: Hamilton’s DNA in the car
Lewis Hamilton begins his second season with Ferrari in a very different position from last year. In 2025, he stepped into a car he had little role in developing.
Now the seven-time world champion says he feels “reset and refreshed” ahead of the new season. Hamilton spent many months helping shape the SF-26 in the simulator, and he says the car now carries his “DNA.”
That link between driver and machine matters in Formula 1. A driver who trusts the car can push harder and make fewer mistakes.
Still, the core engineering group around the seven-time world champion has changed. Riccardo Adami moved to the Ferrari Driver Academy, and Carlo Santi now works with Hamilton on the pit wall in Melbourne.
Reportedly, there will be another swap in Hamilton’s race engineer a few races into the 2026 season. Hamilton said the shift in engineers was “detrimental.” However, a strong car that gives him confidence could reduce the impact of having a new man on the other side of the radio calls.
The SF-26 and the genius of the “Macarena wing”
Ferrari built the SF-26 under the massively revamped 2026 rules. Loïc Serra leads the chassis program while Enrico Gualtieri oversees the power unit.
The car first appeared at Fiorano on Jan. 23. It introduced push-rod suspension and a new manual override mode for its systems.
However, the team maintained that the car they used in Fiorano and the Barcelona shakedown was just the spec-A version. The most talked-about and distinct features didn’t arrive until the Bahrain test.
During the final week of testing, Ferrari revealed two big innovations: a rotating rear wing that flips when active aerodynamics engage and an exhaust wing.
The exhaust wing supposedly directs hot exhaust gases over the rear of the car to clean up airflow and improve downforce efficiency. Engineers designed it to work as an extension of the diffuser’s airflow, helping the car maintain stability while reducing drag.
What makes the idea so striking is that rival teams cannot simply copy it. Ferrari built the concept into the car’s core layout, including the gearbox, differential position and driveshaft angles.
Alongside that solution, Ferrari also tested a radical rotating rear wing that flips when active aerodynamics engage. The paddock quickly nicknamed it the “Macarena wing.” Together, the two ideas show a team willing to push the limits of the new regulations.

Testing: Ferrari sets the benchmark
Three pre-season tests produced one clear signal. Ferrari set the pace.
Charles Leclerc recorded the fastest lap of testing with a 1:31.992 on the C4 tyre compound in Bahrain. His time finished nearly 0.9 seconds faster than the next quickest car, driven by Lando Norris in the McLaren. However, that always comes with the caveat of unknown variables in testing.
Leclerc’s lap also stood almost one second clear of Mercedes driver George Russell’s best time. In modern Formula One, that margin over one lap is significant.
Race simulations told a similar story. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said Ferrari appeared “at the top of the list,” alongside Mercedes.
Driver dynamics: The champion in waiting and the comeback king
Charles Leclerc enters the season with renewed hope. For years, he has shown strong speed over a single lap but lacked a consistent title-winning car.
Testing changed that outlook. Leclerc topped both Bahrain sessions and beat his teammate’s best lap by nearly a full second.
Hamilton adds another layer to the story. The seven-time champion enters his twentieth Formula One season and still seeks an eighth title.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Anthony Davidson said the 2026 cars may suit Hamilton better than the ground-effect designs used in recent years. If Hamilton improves his qualifying results, Davidson believes he can compete for the championship.
The internal battle between the two drivers could shape Ferrari’s season as much as its car performance.
The bookies’ view: The dark horses coming into the light
Ferrari’s testing form quickly changed the betting markets ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
A few weeks earlier, the team sat outside early championship discussions. Now, bookmakers list both Ferrari drivers among the leading contenders.
2026 F1 championship betting odds
| Category | Selection | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| Drivers’ Champion | Charles Leclerc | 5/1 |
| Drivers’ Champion | Lewis Hamilton | 7/1 |
| Constructors’ Champion | Ferrari | 5/2 |
| Australian GP winner | Charles Leclerc | 4/1 |
ReadMotorsport tip: Ferrari at 5/2 for the constructors’ title offers early value if testing pace carries into the season. Leclerc at 4/1 for the Australian Grand Prix also draws attention after his fastest lap of the entire pre-season.
Ferrari verdict
The SF-26 has shown speed, reliability and new ideas. The team also fields two drivers known for their strong race craft.
If Ferrari keeps pace with rivals such as Mercedes during development, the team could fight for both championships early in the season.
ReadMotorsport prediction: Leclerc will challenge for victory in Melbourne, with Hamilton close behind. Tifosi’s long wait for a constructors’ title might finally be over in 2026.
