Fernando Alonso has been taken to hospital after being involved in a road accident while riding his bike in Switzerland.
Italian media first reported the incident on Thursday night, revealing the double Formula 1 world champion was out training near Lugano in Switzerland when he was hit by a car.
Alonso was transported to a nearby hospital where he is understood to be “conscious” and “well in himself” according to a statement issued by Alpine.
“Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland,” it reads. “Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning.
“Alpine F1 Team will not make any further statement at this point in time. Further updates will be given tomorrow.”
In the report published by Gazzetta dello Sport, it claims the initial examinations appear to have shown Alonso has suffered suspected fractures but no serious injuries.
The Spaniard is making his F1 return this season following a two-year spell away racing in other series, but the incident leaves a question mark over his fitness.
Pre-season testing is scheduled to take place in four weeks time in Bahrain, with the first race of the 2021 campaign two weeks later.
Alonso, who has signed a multi-year deal with Alpine, has undergone an extensive testing programme in preparation for his comeback to grand prix racing.
He tested a 2018-spec Renault last year, while also racking up milage in the 2020 car at the end-of-season young drivers’ test in Abu Dhabi.
The 39-year-old left F1 at the end of 2018 with 32 victories to his name, going on to endure more success in sportscars, Indycar and rallying.
Alpine hasn’t announced a reserve driver for 2021 should it need a replacement if Alonso is unable to drive.
