FIA approves 23-race calendar for 2021 F1 season

Formula 1’s record-breaking 23-race calendar for the 2021 season has been approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, but a replacement for Vietnam has yet to be announced.

A provisional calendar for next year was released last month, with F1 sighting its aims to return to a normal schedule following the disruption to the 2020 campaign caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The season will begin at the traditional curtain-raiser in Australia on March 21, before finishing with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 5.

It also features the controversial addition of the first Saudi Arabia Grand Prix in Jeddah, which has been listed as the penultimate round of the season subject to circuit homologation.

Following the annual four-week summer break in August there will be a run of six races in seven weeks, with two triple-headers scheduled.

The first composes of three European rounds at Spa, Zandvoort and Monza, with the Dutch Grand Prix moving to a later date from its original 2020 slot.

Russia, Singapore and Japan will also form three back-to-back races from September 26 to October 10.

Interlagos will remain on the calendar after singing a new five-year deal, but the race will now be know as the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The Spanish Grand Prix in May is subject to a new contract being reached with the race promoter, having only agreed a one-year extension for this year.

The WMSC ratified the 23-race calendar with the fourth round slot on April 25 yet to be filled due to Vietnam’s absence. It is expected one of the new tracks used in the truncated 2020 season will replace the Hanoi street circuit.
