Antonio Felix Da Costa topped final free practice ahead of the Mexico City E-Prix after becoming the first driver to set a lap time under 59 seconds
The BMW driver’s 58.963s lap was the only one to get under 59s, although second-placed Felipe Massa was just 0.175s slower in what was a promising session for the Brazilian FE rookie.
Sebastien Buemi ended the session third for Nissan e.dams, while championship protagonists Jerome D’Ambrosio (Mahindra) and Sam Bird (Virgin) together with Dragon’s Jose Maria Lopez made it six different teams covering the top six positions.
Oliver Rowland capped off a strong free practice two for Nissan in seventh, while Nelson Piquet Jr was eighth fastest ahead of the Audi Sport Abt pair of Lucas DiGrassi and FP1 leading Daniel Abt respectively.
Mitch Evans led the session early on but slipped to 16th during the final moments of the 30-minute session, while Dragon Racing new driver Felipe Nasr was 19th overall, just over a second slower than session-topping Da Costa.
The turn one escape road became a hotspot for mistakes during the session as the likes of Bird, Piquet and Abt locked up and were forced to turn around in the run-off before continuing on.
Oliver Turvey clipped the final chicane early on and damaged the front-left area of his car, giving the NIO mechanics extra work in order to get the British driver back out before the end of the session. Turvey eventually went 17th fastest.
