After five long years, Kimi Raikkonen returned to the top spot of the podium in Austin.
He took his first win of the hybrid era in the United States and played an important part in denying Lewis Hamilton an early championship victory.
Under an early virtual safety car – prompted by another mechanical problem for Daniel Ricciardo – Hamilton dived into the pits while Raikkonen stayed out. Many believed it another wrong strategy call for Ferrari, but the tactic worked out brilliantly for the Italian squad, with Raikkonen taking the win ahead of Max Verstappen as Hamilton came home third.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel’s weekend went from bad to worse when he span on the opening lap and had to climb back up from 15th.
