Russell secures Sochi F2 Sprint victory in mixed conditions, Norris out

George Russell secured victory in the Russian F2 Sprint race in tricky conditions which saw the leaders all make stops for wet-weather tyres.

Russell started from fifth on the grid after his fourth place in yesterdays feature race, but managed to move up to second early on following a crash involving the fast-starting Nicholas Latifi and Alessio Lorandi.

Lorandi miscalculated his braking heading into Turn 5 and speared into the back of the Canadian, the two retiring on the spot as a result.

A quick safety car was needed to clear up the two broken cars, Nirei Fukuzumi leading the field away when the caution period ended.

The poleman struggled for speed however, and was swiftly dispatched by Russell as he swept past on the run down to Turn 2.

The championship leader quickly pulled out a two-second advantage, leaving Fukuzumi to defend from Sergio Sette-Camara.

It was a fairly calm drive for Russell from then on, aside from a pit-stop for wet tyres as the rain started to fall at mid-distance. The Brit excelled in the tricky conditions however, eventually taking the chequered flag over seven-seconds clear of Camara.

Saturdays feature race winner Alexander Albon had a strong drive to come home third from eighth on the reverse grid, while Nyck de Vries defeated Artem Markelov in a late race battle to secure fourth position.

Roberto Mehri drove well in the wet conditions to secure sixth on his F2 return for Campos, while Nirei Fukuzumi faded to seventh by the end of the race. Dorian Boccolacci secured the final point for MP Motorsport in eighth position.

Lando Norris suffered another miserable day following his feature race retirement yesterday, the Brit picking up a ten-second stop/go penalty after making a mistake under the early safety car.

He later made a well-timed stop for the wets and moved up to 15th , but made contact with Arjun Maini in the closing stages of the race, picking up a rear puncture as a result.

Norris pulled to the side of the circuit to retire, the 2019 McLaren F1 racer now eliminated from title contention.

Russell now holds a 37-point advantage heading to the Abu Dhabi finale, with Alexander Albon now the only man able to stop him from lifting the 2018 F2 title trophy.
