Hamilton quickest in final Russian GP practice

Lewis Hamilton was quickest in the final free practice session for the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes 1-2.

The Ferrari’s of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen initially set the pace in the session, but it didn’t take Hamilton and his team-mate Valtteri Bottas long to get into the mix.

Hamilton put in a couple faster laps throughout the session while he was top of the times, his last being 1m33.067 seconds.

The championship leader was just over a quarter of a second faster than Bottas in second place.

Third and fourth were taken by Ferrari with Vettel leading his team-mate Raikkonen, although by the end of the session the pair was 0.6s behind Mercedes.

Vettel was nearly caught out at the end of the session when he was sent out to make a practice start. The German didn’t make it out by the time the pits closed and had to quickly stop the car at the end of the pit lane.

Red Bull took fifth and sixth in the final practice session with Max Verstappen the only other driver to get within one second of Hamilton’s fastest lap.

Daniel Ricciardo left it until the final minutes of practice to set his fastest lap which put him in sixth.

The fastest driver outside of the top three teams was Sauber’s Charles Leclerc with a 1m34.628s lap, with his team-mate Marcus Ericsson down in 15th.

Force India duo Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez finished in eighth and 10th respectively, being split by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
